What does 16:9 mean?
An aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height, not the number of pixels. A smaller and a larger image can have the same ratio when their dimensions scale proportionally.
Formula: height = width × 9 ÷ 16. For a known height, width = height × 16 ÷ 9. Keep both dimensions in the same unit.
Where 16:9 is useful

Ratio versus resolution
The ratio describes shape; resolution describes pixel dimensions. A frame can be the right shape but too small for your intended use. Conversely, a high-resolution image can still need cropping if its shape does not match the target.
Resizing without distortion
Scale width and height by the same factor to preserve the source ratio. If the source ratio differs from 16:9, choose between cropping to fill the frame or fitting the whole image with possible empty space. Do not stretch the image unevenly.
